Bearcats lose hard-fought conference game against Piedmont

Although the Bearcats lost a Southern Carolina Conference game on Friday to Piedmont 40-33, they fought until the end.

The Panthers made the only touchdown in the first quarter. They made another touchdown and a two-point conversion 10 minutes into the second quarter, bringing the score to 14-0.

With 4:45 on the clock in the third quarter, the Panthers made yet another touchdown, but the Bearcats made a touchdown less than a minute later. Alan Campbell (#8, a senior) made the touchdown while Manuel Alonso (#11, a junior) made the PAT, bringing the score to 20-7. The Panthers scored another touchdown just minutes later, ending the quarter 26-7.

Less than two minutes into the final quarter, J’Maine Harris (#6, a junior) made a touchdown for the Bearcats. The team attempted a two-point conversion but didn’t make it. The Bearcats soon made another touchdown by Jekev Robinson (#25, a senior), though an attempted PAT by Alsonso was no good. This brought the score to 26-19, Panthers.

The Panthers made another touchdown and PAT just minutes later, upping the score to 33-19. Will Smith (#10, a senior) made a touchdown for the Bearcats with less than five minutes on the clock and Alonso scored the PAT., bringing the score to 33-26. The Bearcats’ hope to catch up was dashed when the Panthers made another touchdown and PAT with less than two minutes on the clock. Although they knew they had lost, the Bearcats kept fighting and Harris made a touchdown pass to Scott Kendall (#4, a senior) with 0:18 on the clock. Alonso’s successfully completed the PAT, bringing the final score to 40-33, Piedmont.

At halftime, the Anson High School band performed its rendition of “Surf’s Up” featuring the music of the Beach Boys. The Anson Middle School band joined them for a performance of “The Hey Song.”

The boys will play another conference game at Cuthbertson on Friday. They will play at home again for senior night on Nov. 8 against Sun Valley at 7:30 p.m.
