November 26, 2013
Exciting plans are under way for the 2013 Christmas gathering for all hometown veterans. This meeting will conclude the 2013 activities by the Anson County Veteran’s Council. Officers for this year have been Billy McCormick, president; Al Dean, vice president; Ann James, secretary; and Anne McCormick, treasurer. The festive gathering will be held at the Lockhart-Taylor Center on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
Volunteers from Richmond County AM Vets Post No. 316 will be performing a flag folding ceremony.
Dara Kelly Campbell, president of the local Women’s Auxiliary Post 10004, will share the purpose and ongoing projects of their group. The group meets monthly at the Hampton B. Allen library.
A delicious home cooked meal will be served to veterans and their spouses. The ladies providing this meal have prepared tasty meals throughout the year to show their appreciation and support for the Anson County veterans.
Following the meal, new officers for the year will be elected. Officer positions include: president, vice president and secretary. Other business items include an update on the Memorial Garden Park.
At the last meeting of the veterans, the council encouraged all veterans to donate to the local State Credit Union’s support drive to collect items to be shipped to soldiers. Veterans were also invited and encouraged to attend El Bethel Baptist Church of Wadesboro for a Veterans Day service.
Dana Maness, from Uwharrie Bank, formerly Anson Bank and Trust, drafted a Constitution and By-Laws document that was later adopted by the organization. Plans to pursue a non-profit status and a Veteran’s Memorial Park will be next year’s challenge, along with bringing more awareness to the public to support veterans.
A local live band headed by Ronnie Jarman from Lilesville will be providing entertainment for the evening. This group will provide a variety of musical songs that will be sure to please everyone. Santa will also make an appearance to bring cheer from the North Pole.
