The Wadesboro Town Council made further changes to its budget and adopted an employee health insurance plan during its regular monthly meeting on Monday.
The council also voted to remove the rubber mulch at City Pond and replace with with wood mulch, trimming several thousand dollars from its budget. Other changes to the budget included changes to the town’s water/sewer fund.
The council also voted to raise the Wadesboro Police Department officers’ off-duty pay from $20/hour to $30/hour. The $20/hour salary has been in place at least nine years, prompting the council to increase it to combat cost-of-living increases and to make it comparable with surrounding agencies. (The Anson County Sheriff’s Office offers $30/hour, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office offers $25/hour, the Monroe Police Department offers $30/hour, and the Mount Gilead offers $40/hour in off-duty pay.)
Town Manager Alex Sewell updated the council on the town’s efforts to begin a recycling program. Sewell said he has been working with Waste Management to begin a centralized recycling program. The town is still looking at locations for the receptacle but is considering placing it in the area behind the police department.
Sewell also commented on East Wade Bridge’s repair schedule. He said the town anticipates going to bid with the project in July and hopes to begin repairs this summer for a tentative January completion date.
