Anson County held their Memorial Day Ceremony on May 26 at the courthouse in Wadesboro. The guest speaker for the occasion was Mark Ashby, an Iraq Veteran and retired Army Veteran. To hear Mr. Ashby speak was an honor. As I sat reading the theme of the program, “Honoring Those Who Gave the Ultimate Sacrifice” I thought of my father, Jasper Robinson, a Veteran of World War II and exactly what Memorial Day is.
Memorial Day, a federal holiday in which we celebrate on the last Monday in May is to honor the men and women of war, our veterans. The first official Memorial Day was May 30, 1868 at the Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
But truly the defining moment of the entire ceremony was meeting Mr. Hanna. Mr. Hanna is 93 years YOUNG. Mr. Hanna is a Veteran of the World War and a prisoner of war. Just knowing he is a citizen of Anson County and he was willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom is amazing. Today and everyday we should honor our seniors citizens.
Sincerely Dedicated to others,
Anson County Commissioner
