A Wadesboro Police Department officer is under internal investigation.

WPD Chief Janie Schutz said an unidentified officer was under investigation for allegedly improperly disposing of a methamphetamine lab or meth precursors in McFarlan in September. Children lived in the home.

There are protocols in place in the disposal of a meth lab due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals used in its manufacture.

“They are investigating the children’s parents, grandparents and the mother’s arrest in South Carolina for methamphetamine,” Schutz said.

She said she has asked District Attorney Reece Saunders to request an independent investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation but has not heard anything from him. Saunders could not be reached for comment.

She said the internal investigation was not finished. She also said she would have never known of the situation if the Department of Social Services (DSS) had not alerted her.

“As long as she is investigating anything, I’m not going to comment on it,” Sheriff Tommy Allen said. He would not say if the Sheriff’s Office had received a report of a meth lab in McFarlan in September. However, he did say he knew of the situation.

DSS director Lula Jackson also said she could not comment on the story.
