The Anson High School boy’s varsity basketball team has played Porter Ridge three times this year, winning all three with narrow two-point victories. The boys played a first round SCC conference tournament contest and the final was a closely-contested 83-81 victory by the Bearcats at home.

Bunyon Tyson (Sr. G) led the way again with 30 points, including two clutch free throws at the end of the game, and added seven rebounds, four steals and 10 assists — three rebounds shy of another triple double. Devonta Teal (So. F) was dominant on the boards, collecting a double-double himself, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds in arguably his best performance of the season. He also extended his defensive game to the floor, swiping three steals as well.

Stephen Minter (Sr. F) dropped in 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks, and Will Smith played excellent defense in addition to his nine points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal.

As a team, the Bearcats led by four at the half, and were able to overcome several second half charges by the Pirates in order to hold on to the win and secure a spot in the semi-finals at Sun Valley.

SCC Conference Semi-finals vs. Marvin Ridge

The Bearcats got off to a quick start Wednesday at the SCC Conference Semi-Finals vs. Marvin Ridge, closing out a 75-71 win after jumping out to a 16-7 lead over the first quarter with smothering defense and an attacking offense. Bunyon Tyson (Sr. G) scored his second-straight 30 point game, adding 11 rebounds and 6 assists to the effort to lead the Bearcats. Tyson took three crucial charges on the defensive end as well. Fellow senior Stephen Minter posted 15 points and 13 rebounds in a solid performance. The Bearcats also received help from junior Will Smith (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Darren Murray (7 points, 3 rebounds).

With Sun Valley’s 33-30 victory over Weddington tonight at Sun Valley, the Bearcats will face the Spartans in Friday’s final at 7:30, also at Sun Valley (tournament host). The ladies final will precede at 6 pm.
