PEACHLAND — Cub Scout Pack 530 is hosting an electronics recycling drive on Saturday, Nov. 7.

From 9 a.m. to noon, residents and business owners can drop off old and broken electronics and appliances, as well as used toner cartridges, to Peachland United Methodist Church on Allen Street in Peachland.

Cub Scouts will take computers, phones, monitors, VCR/DVD players, small appliances, white goods and TVs, as well as toner cartridges — anything that charges up or plugs in. The disposal service is free.

Certificates of destruction are available so donors can be assured their data is safe. For questions, contact Laura Laney at 704-994-9173.

‘E-CYCLING’ BENEFITS

Organizers shared the following benefits and advantages of recycling electronic waste, which are adapted from a list on the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s website:

• Conserves natural resources. Recycling recovers valuable materials from old electronics that can be used to make new products. As a result, we save energy, reduce pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and save resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.

• Protects your surroundings. Safe recycling of outdated electronics promotes sound management of toxic chemicals such as lead and mercury.

• Helps others. Donating used electronics benefits your community by passing on ready-to-use or refurbished equipment to those who need it.

• Creates jobs. eCycling creates jobs for professional recyclers and refurbishers and creates new markets for the valuable components that are dismantled. Pack 530’s recycling partner is in Anson County.

• Saves landfill space. E-waste is a growing waste stream. By recycling these items, landfill space is conserved.
