State agents say an Anson County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a wanted man while responding to a domestic violence complaint Friday.

Sgt. Donald Jenks fatally shot 48-year-old Kim Lee Long around 11 a.m. Friday, according to Audria Bridges, special agent in charge with the State Bureau of Investigation. The shooting took place on Stanback Ferry Ice Plant Road east of Wadesboro.

Authorities said Long was wanted on pending charges in Charlotte. Jenks was the only officer involved, Bridges said.

“Deputy Jenks responded to the area after receiving a 911 call from the estranged wife of Kim Long alleging a domestic violence encounter with Long,” Bridges said in a Monday email. She did not describe the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

The SBI is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure in shootings involving law enforcement officers. District Attorney Reece Saunders will review the case.

Sheriff Landric Reid declined to comment on the incident, other than to confirm that the SBI is investigating.

Jenks has been with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office since 2003, according to Bridges.

Long had pending charges of violating a domestic violence protective order in Gaston and Mecklenburg counties and charges of misdemeanor assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications in Gaston County, according to court records.

Anyone with information in the case or who was in the area at the time of the incident is asked to contact authorities at 704-694-7083.
