Anson County is gearing up for Christmas with a variety of holiday activities.

WADESBORO

Seniors who registered by Nov. 30 will be treated to the annual senior Christmas luncheon at the Lockhart-Taylor Center at 11 a.m. today and Thursday. About 250 seniors will be served at each event, which will be hosted by Grace Senior Center.

Entertainment will be provided by Thomas Cureton, and each senior who attends will be given a gift bag, according to Rita Short, in-home services supervisor.

Those of all ages are welcome to attend the town’s annual Christmas parade at 4 p.m. Thursday. The parade will go through the uptown area. Afterward, there will be a tree-lighting on the steps in front of the courthouse with caroling and hot chocolate served by Uptown Wadesboro, Inc.

Those looking for another holiday treat can attend “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” at the Ansonia Theatre from Dec. 10-20. Director Tommy Wooten will lead a cast of more than 50 members in the play, which is based off of a story written by Barbara Robinson.

Tickets to the play are $15 and a group rate of $12 is available for those with 10 or more people. The show will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 3 p.m. on Sundays. Call the Anson County Arts Council at 704-694-4950 or visit www.ansoniatheatre.com for tickets.

PEACHLAND

The town of Peachland will hold its tree-lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday at the town square. After the ceremony, the festivities will move into the fire department, where Santa will read books to children.

The group will sing Christmas carols and hear both the secular and the biblical Christmas stories, according to Town Clerk Lynn Griffin.

The Rev. Phillip Parrish of Peachland Methodist Church will say the opening prayer and read the biblical Christmas story, Griffin said. The Rev. Angel Christ from Peachland Baptist Church will lead the singing.

OTHER TOWNS

Officials in other Anson County towns said they are not planning Christmas activities for this year, though Ansonville and Lilesville town leaders said they hope to host holiday events sometime in the future.

Town of McFarlan representatives could not be reached by press deadline.
