The deadline to apply for a Kenan Fellowship sponsored by Pee Dee Electric is quickly approaching.

Educators who teach grades K-12 within Pee Dee Electric’s service territory are eligible to apply for the fellowship, which is designed to advance educational excellence by fostering collaboration between STEM educators and business and industries across North Carolina.

The deadline for applications is Monday, Jan. 25. A description of the fellowship offered through Pee Dee Electric, program overview and access to the application can be found on the Kenan Fellows website at www.kenanfellows.org. The 2016-17 Kenan fellows will be named in early May 2016.

The fellowship is a paid internship opportunity that provides solutions-driven K-12 teachers with 80 hours of professional development while developing innovative lessons for students, leading professional development for their colleagues and designing community engagement activities. These educational resources and programs are shared with other educators and used in classrooms, school systems and communities throughout the state and beyond.

In addition to the internship and professional development, the selected educator will receive a $5,000 stipend. A one-year commitment is required and educators must remain in the classroom while completing the requirements.

“Preparing students for the real world takes teachers who learn in the real world,” said Lisa Hibler, associate director for the Kenan Fellows program. “Kenan Fellowships provide a way for educators to learn how the work being done within business and industry settings can be made relevant to students.”

The Kenan Fellows program was established in 2000 as an initiative of the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science at N.C. State University. The program fosters collaboration between K-12 educators, science, technology, engineering and math professionals, philanthropic organizations, universities, museums, businesses and industries across North Carolina to drive innovations in education and inspire future generations of great thinkers, leaders, and inventors.

“As members of the communities in which we serve,” said Spivey, “we feel it’s important to provide ways for our educators, students and citizens alike to benefit from educational opportunities by promoting and supporting excellence in education. The Kenan Fellows program is providing us with a solid foundation to do just that.”
