The annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was held Saturday, April 16 at the Fireman’s Training Center in Wadesboro. The Derby, sponsored by C&M Auto Supply, allowed scouts from the newly-formed Pee Dee District (Anson and Richmond counties) to build their own unique wooden car from a kit and race against their peers.

Laura Laney, the leader of Cub Pack 530, said that the benefits for both Cub Scouts and their adult partners are discovered through the derby process itself: strengthening bonds, sharing responsibility, developing teamwork, learning new skills, exercising creativity, building sportsmanship, and making new friends.

At the race, each participant received a patch, and the first- to third-place winners in each den received a handmade medallion. In addition, special category certificates were awarded and the overall winners received trophies.

Den winners who advanced to the council race were:

• Tigers: 1st – Bobby Little – Pack 530, 2nd – Trenton McManus – Pack 530, 3rd – Cameron Eddins – Pack 530

• Bears: 1st – Shakelin Liles – Pack 505

• Webelos: 1st – Shafraviem Liles – Pack 505, 2nd – Daequan Leak – Pack 505, 3rd – Luke Dumas – Pack 1215

The overall winners were:
