Filing for the 2015 Municipal Election ended on Friday, with a total of 35 candidates vying for various mayoral and town council seats throughout Anson County.

Anson County Board of Elections director Steve Adams pointed out that early voting begins on Oct. 22 and the last day to register to vote in this election will be Oct. 9. However, he said the only town that applied for early voting was Wadesboro, so early voting will only be available for the Wadesboro Town Council and Mayor elections.

Ansonville

In Ansonville, incumbent Mayor Lyndell Ingram did not file for re-election, but Joe M. Estridge Jr. has filed for the mayoral seat unopposed.

Five candidates have filed for the five seats up for grabs on the Ansonville Town Council: incumbent council members Phyllis Watkins, Jesse T. Huntley, Denise Watkins Cannon and Kenneth Martin have filed, along with newcomer Sarah E. Burns.

Lilesville

Incumbent Lilesville Mayor Richard Harrington has filed to retain his position as mayor, while five incumbents have also filed to continue to serve on the Lilesville Town Council. One newcomer, Peggy Treadaway, has also thrown her hat into the ring.

Incumbent Lilesville council members seeking re-election are: Frank E. McAllister, Bernice Bennett, Juanita Williams, Steve Whitlock and Jason T. Clarke.

McFarlan

McFarlan Mayor Mark Holloway is not seeking re-election this term, but Diane Timmons has filed for the mayoral seat.

The McFarlan Town Council has five seats up for election, but only three candidates have filed. Debbie Bryant and Michael Foster are new to the town council, and incumbent Kim Crowley Gainey has filed for re-election.

Because only three people have filed for election to the five available seats, Adams said that either write-in candidates will fill those seats, or the newly elected council can appoint individuals for the two remaining seats.

Morven

Morven is the only municipality in Anson County that will have a fight for the mayor position. Current Councilman and former mayor Theodore Carr has filed to challenge incumbent Morven Mayor Houston Pratt.

There are also two open seats on the Morven Town Council, and incumbent James H. Cohen Jr. has filed to retain his seat, as has appointee Tim Watkins, who was filling Ronald Gathings’ seat after he resigned in May. Newcomer Corinthia Lashelle Lemon has also filed for one of the two open seats.

However, if Carr is not successful in his mayoral bid, Adams said he will still have his seat on the Morven Town Council. If he is elected mayor, a new council member will be appointed.

Peachland

Incumbents only have filed for seats in Peachland. Current Mayor Richard Allen has filed for another term, and current Peachland Town Council members Jeff Davis and Laura Hasty have filed to retain their seats.

Polkton

Incumbent Polkton Mayor Minnie P. Staton will keep her mayoral seat, as she filed unopposed for the mayor position.

The Polkton Town Council has five available seats, with four incumbents filing for those: Sissy Stegall, Jimmy Hildreth, Myra Thomas Dalgleish and Johnny Raye Faulk Jr. Newcomer to the Town Council and former mayor Henry Furr has also filed for the council.

Wadesboro

In Wadesboro, incumbent Mayor Bill Thacker has filed to retain his seat. He is running unopposed.

There are two open seats on the Wadesboro Town Council, and incumbent Councilmen Jeremy Burr and John I. Ballard Jr. have filed to retain those seats. Mary Ann Sanders has also filed for election to the Wadesboro Town Council.
