An early morning drive turned fatal for a group of three 18-year-olds on Sunday.
Michael Troy Kelly, Alex Velez and Joshua Colby Ponds, all 18 and all of Wadesboro, were traveling around 100 mph on Pinkston Road at 2:30 a.m. Sept. 29, N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper 1st Sgt. M.R. Leach said. Kelly was the driver of the vehicle, Velez was in the front passenger seat and Ponds was in the right rear seat when the accident occurred, Leach said.
“They lost control on a curve, and ran off the road on the left side, striking a tree,” he explained.
For reasons still unknown, Leach said the teens removed the car’s license plate, stereo and speakers, and called a friend to pick them up to take them home.
“At about 5 a.m., the Ponds subject got up to go to the bathroom and started bleeding,” Leach said. “His mom called an ambulance and they took him to the hospital, and he died at the hospital.”
An autopsy was being performed Monday morning, and Leach said he expected charges to be filed. “High speed was involved, and the investigation is ongoing,” he said.
