Students taking a class at South Piedmont Community College held an event showing their Uptown Wadesboro revitalization ideas to community members last Wednesday.

The students are taking Computer Design Basics from SPCC at Anson New Tech High School, with instructor Linda Monroe-Ward. For the last month, they have brainstormed design ideas and taken photos that they then edited to share their vision. Their ideas ranged from creating a large mural of a woman singing next to the words “Life is Beautiful” to possibilities of creating space for outdoor movies.

The ideas are arts-heavy, ranging from hopes of outdoor movies to soulful murals and visions of musicals, plays and bluegrass music being performed at the stage Uptown.

Other ideas included painting the town fire hydrants with different pictures correlating to what they are in front of — Sparky the Dog for the one in front of the fire department, a children-themed one for one in front of the Partnership for Children, and other designs. The students also said they would like to see large banners to support the Bearcats and for advertising Uptown events.

Other suggestions included community art projects that let local artist be overseers while multiple community artists work on murals, and incorporating Ray Shelton Ball Field for outdoor music events. They also suggested cleaning up and repaving the open lot across from the Ansonia Theatre, and planting grass, plants and flowers.

The students also suggested bringing People Fest back to Wadesboro to bring more people to the town. They advised including games, food, concession stands, talent shows, and charging a fee for people to set up stands, games and talent shows.

If made reality, some of these ideas would take place on public property, but many are simple spruce-ups on private property. If property and business owners painted their buildings, replaced worn awnings, included folding sidewalk signs advertising events and lunch specials, and otherwise neatened their building’s facade, Uptown aesthetics could be improved drastically, the class showed.

The class plans to present their project to other local organizations, including the Wadesboro Town Council.
