Vancine Sturdivant, who has served as the Anson Democratic Party Chair since 2006, announced at Thursday night’s monthly meeting that she is stepping down.

“As of tonight, I have to step down as chair,” she said. “I cannot campaign for county commissioner and remain as chair of the Democratic Party.”

Sturdivant has been serving as county commissioner for the Lilesville district since former Commissioner Claude Spencer passed away in 2012. She said she remembers when she agreed to serve as the county’s party chair, after she helped organize one of the most successful voter registration drives in the county’s history to elect now-President Barack Obama.

“I have loved every minute of it,” she said. “I thank God for the experience.”

Sturdivant added that she will remain heavily involved in the local Democratic Party. “Everything I did before I became chair, I am going to continue to do,” she said. “Everything I did as a county commissioner, I am going to continue to do, because I am Vancine Sturdivant. Greater things are coming.”

Bruce Sturdivant, precinct chair for Morven, was appointed the new chair. He said he was a six-term member of the Morven Town Council, and is married with twin daughters.

The Democratic Party’s county convention is planned for April 5 at 10 a.m. in the Hampton B. Allen Library. A breakfast preceding the convention will start at 8 a.m. The party will hold its next regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. March 20.
