Both the boys’ and the girls’ varsity basketball teams suffered disappointing losses to Weddington High School on Friday.


The ladies fell behind from the first quarter, earning only eight points to Weddington’s 15. The Lady Cats began to slowly catch up in the second quarter, earning 11 points to Weddington’s 10 for a halftime score of 25-19.

In the third quarter, Weddington pulled further ahead with 14 points while Anson followed with 12. The Warriors continued to stay slightly ahead in the final quarter, making 12 points to the Lady Cats’ 11 and giving Weddington a 51-42 win.

Chanel Pauldo (Jr., #15) amassed 17 of the team’s 42 points. Shinitra Little (Sr., #44) also scored several points, earning 10. Jaida Robinson (Jr., #32) followed with 7, Zahria Alderson (Sr., #0) earned 5, and Jasmine Rivers (Sr., #1) earned 3 points.

This loss was particularly devastating for the Lady Cats as the girls have had a tremendous season with a long streak of wins. The girls now have a 13-2 season score, according to high school sports website MaxPreps.com.


The boys also fell behind from the start, earning only 11 points to Weddington’s 18. They fell even further behind in the second quarter, earning 16 points to the Warriors’ 22 for a halftime score of 40-27.

Both teams scored 23 points in the third quarter and again tied for 12 points in the final quarter, giving Weddington a 75-62 win.

Parrish Stevons (Jr., #1) earned the most points with 12 while William Smith (Sr., #11) followed closely behind with 11 points. Devonta Teal (Jr., #5) followed with nine, Jaqualyn Robinson (Jr., #42) earned eight, and Jerrell McNeil (Jr., #23), J’Maine Harris (Jr., #10), and Terrill Tillman (Sr., #4) all earned five points each. Latrell Willoughby (Jr., #20) earned four points while Deangelo Tyson (So., #21) made three points.

This loss gives the boys a 7-9 season score, according to MaxPreps.com.

Both teams will play at Sun Valley on Friday (the girls at 6:30 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.). Their next home game will be on Jan. 31 against Weddington with games beginning at 4 p.m.
