Despite the weather, the Anson County Arts Council’s Art & Soul dinner dance on Feb. 16 went on as planned, and the cold temperatures outside did nothing to dampen the fun. Those attending were treated to the music of one of the best bands ever to play in Anson County, Charlotte’s Bobby Plair and Friends, and surrounded by examples of artwork by local artists.
The music began before dinner was served and continued as the crowd enjoyed a soul food buffet of fried chicken, ham biscuits, collards, mac ‘n cheese, pintos, slaw, and more provided by Anson County’s Jammin’ Collards and Company. Then the band upped the energy level as people filled the dance floor.
Though saxophonist Carl Ratliff, a native of Morven, was unable to join the band because of the snow, his mother was there enjoying the evening along with everyone else.
This popular event is presented by the Anson County Arts Council as a way of celebrating the diversity of Anson County’s citizens, and each year many familiar faces return to enjoy the fun. According to some, they cannot understand why this event, with quality entertainment and food, is not as well attended as the Barn Blast and the Clover Crawl. The Arts Council works tirelessly to promote the arts in Anson County.
If you missed out this year, hopefully you’ll make it to future Arts Council events. Every time you attend, you re-energize the volunteers who make possible all the events such as Art & Soul, Bowling for the Arts, Bach’s Lunches, Artists Receptions, and Ansonia Theatre performances. It is this small group of unpaid workers that enables the Arts Council to bring more events and entertainment to Anson County than any other group in the area.
