A Wadesboro Police officer is reaching out to local children.
Patrolman Brandon Smith visits special education children at Wadesboro Primary School.
Smith feels a personal connection to the students. His late sister was autistic. Smith tries to visit once a week. While he’s there, he reads books, plays outside with the students or eats lunch. Recently, they traced the outline of his body in chalk outside.
“I enjoy being around them,” he said. Smith is a new officer who will have been with the force for one year in July, according to Wadesboro Police Chief Janie Schutz.
“They look forward to him coming,” special education teacher Lauren Dugan said.
On Friday, he and Sgt. Kyle Beam were visiting the children on a special occasion. The children were throwing a birthday party complete with cake, ice cream and potato chips.
