The town of Wadesboro recently welcomed a new guest: Flat Stanley, a small paper, colored, cut-out doll, courtesy of Yesenia, a fourth-grader in Swannanoa, N.C.
Yesenia requested that Stanley go on several adventures in her letter, which was sent to Town Hall. Although Flat Stanley’s envelope was addressed to “Town of Wadesboro, 124 Dorton St. Charlotte, Wadesbord, NC 28213,” the letter still made it to the Town Hall at 124-126 E. Wade St.
“I am sending my flat stantley to you,” Yesenia wrote. “My flat standley is a boy… Flat Standley would like to have so much fun with you. He is so interesting going to Wadesbord in the piedmount. Flat Standley would like to take a picture with you doing something. Flat Standley is going to have so so much fun with you doing something fun. P.S. Can you send some information about you with my Flat Standley?”
The town has honored Yesenia’s request and has taken Stanley to several places in town.
The Flat Stanley Project helps connect children with other participants. Children create the Flat Stanleys themselves and send them off to their chosen destination. “Kids then talk about, track, and write about their flat character’s journey and adventures,” according to the Flat Stanley website. “Although similar to a pen-pal activity, Flat Stanley is actually much more enriching-students don’t have to wonder where to begin or what to write about. The sender and the recipient already have a mutual friend, Flat Stanley.”
