Polkton Police Chief Kevin Mullis resigned during a special town council meeting April 20, and since then, The Anson Record has learned that Mullis is under investigation by the SBI and Attorney General’s Office.
The Anson County District Attorney’s Office requested that the SBI open an investigation, said Noelle Talley, public information officer for the Attorney General’s Office. “We are very limited in what information we can release,” she said. “The allegations involve mishandling of evidence.”
No charges have yet been filed, but Talley said charges may be pending. If charges are filed, Talley said the attorney general will be the prosecutor in the case.
The investigation is in regards to an incident that occurred while Mullis was chief of police in the town of Lilesville. Mullis was police chief in Lilesville from September 2008 to January 2011. Lilesville Town Clerk Lynn Whitlock said she could not comment on the case, nor could current Lilesville Police Chief Bobby Gallimore.
Polkton Town Clerk Libby Cameron said that Mullis did not give any specific reasons for his resignation late last month. “While he was here,” she said, “he was an excellent employee.”
The town of Polkton is currently seeking a new police chief. Mullis was the town’s first police chief in almost 10 years when he started on Jan. 1, 2011.
He did not return calls for comment.
