Former Polkton Police Chief Kevin Mullis has been arrested, Anson County Sheriff Tommy Allen confirmed Monday morning.
Mullis was arrested Thursday afternoon and charged with one count of felony larceny and one count of embezzlement. The charges stem from an incident that occurred while Mullis was serving as Chief of Police of Lilesville, a position he held prior to taking the Polkton chief’s job. Mullis resigned from his position as Polkton police chief in April 2012 and, according to the sheriff, has not worked in law enforcement since.
Last year, Noelle Talley, public information officer for the Attorney General’s Office told The Anson Record: “We are very limited in what information we can release. The allegations involve mishandling of evidence.”
An Anson County grand jury returned two bills of indictment against Mullis earlier in the week. Allen said that Mullis turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office late Thursday afternoon.
He was released on a written promise. A future court date will be set in Anson County Superior Court.
The State Bureau of Investigation was the investigating agency.
Mullis was police chief in Lilesville from September 2008 to January 2011. Polkton Town Clerk Libby Cameron said after Mullis’s resignation in 2012 that he did not give any specific reasons for his resignation. He was Polkton’s first police chief in 10 years.
“While he was here,” Cameron said, “he was an excellent employee.”
