Working families need more flexibility
As I travel throughout North Carolina’s communities, I hear regularly from families who are struggling to balance the ever-increasing demands of work with the desire to care for and be with their family. This got me thinking about the reasons folks start their own business, and I believe one of the biggest motivating factors is the desire to have some control over their own lives. Part of the vision that my House Republican colleagues and I a...

Making sense of General Assembly’s flurry of bills
Over 1,700 bills have been introduced in the N.C. House and Senate this year. I must tell you I feel that is excessive, mainly because many of them do not address the issues I feel are most important to our state. In my view, we need to be primarily focused on our economy, job creation, education and policies to make North Carolina state government more efficient and responsible in providing services to our citizens. Although the N.C. Senate ...

Warmer weather brings spring cleaning, home repairs — and scams
As spring has arrived and the weather warms, we may begin to look at projects around the house that we’ve either put off because of winter; or this time of the year brings us to wanting and maybe needing to do some repairs and work around the house. As a self-taught handyman, I enjoy doing many of these jobs myself but I know my limitations and some things must be contracted out. As sheriff over the years I’ve seen many, many people make de...

‘Obamacare’ must be repealed
In 2010, President Obama signed into law the Affordable Care Act, and asserted that “it will take four years to implement fully many of these reforms, because we need to implement them responsibly. We need to get this right.” Far from getting it right, Obamacare has turned out to be the abysmal mess that so many warned it would be. Not only does it increase costs at a time when every dollar matters, but it has actually terminated American job...

Keep our grandfather’s fire burning
“Everybody in North Carolina should have heard that speech.” Someone had just heard Tom Lambeth’s recent remarks to the North Caroliniana Society, which was presenting him with its annual award for service to our state. Lambeth, longtime former executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, used the occasion to talk about some of the people and some of the stories that help define North Carolina and its history for him. Lambeth...

Honoring a N.C. legend and local agriculture
Many of you have mentioned you enjoy my occasional history lesson in my legislative report so here’s one for this week. In the history of our great state of N.C., have you ever known of a father and son who both served as N.C. lieutenant governor? This has only happened once and a prominent Anson County family has this distinction — the Taylors. Hoyt Pat Taylor Sr. served as lieutenant governor from 1949-1953, follow...

Out of many, one
At 2:45 p.m., on Monday, April 15, Patriots Day, two bombs were detonated in downtown Boston. These bombs, designed to injure, did their work. Folks just like you and I — folks who had families, friends, and loved ones — were victims to this senseless act of violence. This wasn’t supposed to be a day of controversy, politics, or a rally cry for a cause. This was a day to cheer on the 25,000 marathon runners and celebrate the extraordinary end...
