Despite their efforts, the girls lost 9-0 to Marvin Ridge on Tuesday.

Here, the girls tried to keep Marvin Ridge from earning any more goals. “Our defense has improved a whole lot,” coach Brittany Raines said. “It has been our biggest area of improvement.”

The women’s soccer team lost a home conference game to Marvin Ridge 9-0 on Tuesday.

The Lady Bearcats also lost a game to Weddington on Monday 1-0.

Like many of the other coaches, coach Brittany Raines has a young team this year, with only two seniors playing for her. Many of her students have never played soccer before.

Raines named senior Mallary Taylor (#27) as her MVP for the game and overall this season. Taylor is the team’s goalie.

In addition to having a young team, Raines said her girls don’t have as much exposure to soccer as some other teams they face. “Most of the girls who played start in seventh or eighth grade, and don’t play travel ball,” she said. “For [other teams], it’s like a culture to them, and we’re still learning.”

The team has been working on its weak points. “Our defense has improved a whole lot,” she said. “It has been our biggest area of improvement. Other coaches have told me so, too.”

Despite the loss, Raines said the team is doing well. “This season, we’ve improved greatly since last year,” she said. “The girls understand their roles better and are consistently improving.”

The girls will next play at Sun Valley High School in Monroe on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
