Both the varsity and JV football teams suffered losses to Parkwood last week.

The varsity Bearcats had a narrow loss on Friday night, losing their game at Parkwood High School by a final score of only 7-6.

Neither team made a touchdown in the first quarter, but Parkwood made a touchdown and PAT in the second quarter, putting them ahead of Anson 7-0 by halftime.

Touchdowns eluded both teams in the third quarter, but Anson made a touchdown in the final quarter. Failing to score again, Anson lost the game 7-6.

JV

The JV Bearcats lost a home game to Parkwood on Thursday night.

Neither team managed a touchdown throughout the game. The scoreboard still read 0-0 until the last few seconds of the game when, with about six seconds on the block, Parkwood made a touchdown, pushing them to a 6-0 victory over Anson.

Ralph Jackson, head coach of Anson High School’s football program, faced the dejected teens, some of whom were crying, after the game. He assured them that this was one loss and that the team will have another game to fight.

Jackson also told them he is not disappointed in them. “I’m still proud to be a Bearcat and I still love you guys,” he said. “Individually, you mean the world to me.”

Coach Marshall Taylor, head of the JV team, said the team made a few minor errors but played hard. “I think our guys played a very good game,” he said. “In a close game, you can not make a lot of mistakes, and there’s a few things we’ve got to clean up. I feel like our guys could’ve won the game, but it’s the small things we’ve got to work on. But at the end of the night, it was a dogfight and the guys played hard. We played hard and that’s all I can ask for.”

In the last few seconds before Parkwood’s sole touchdown, he said the Bearcats just weren’t prepared. “Last few seconds, it’s just, you’ve got so many things going through your mind as a coach,” Taylor said. “You’re trying to defend, and there’s players out there trying to execute, and in the heat of the moment, you know, the other team just caught a play, and you weren’t prepared for it, at the end of the day.”

Taylor said he looks forward to the team facing their next opponent after a break this week.

The JV team will play at Weddington High School at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 8.

The varsity Bearcats will next play at Anson High School against Weddington at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 9.
