On Friday, teachers and staff at Morven Elementary were treated to a free lunch, courtesy of nonprofit organization, Las Amigas.
“The teachers and staff members have a very strong influence in the areas they serve,” said Joletha Little, president of the Morven Chapter of Las Amigas, Inc. “They are often viewed as underpaid and for most under-appreciated, but their work is vital to the success of this town.”
Little said that Las Amigas has done similar events in previous years, but she wanted to do it this year in particular to “jump start the year.”
“I really wanted to do something for the teachers,” she added. “They work so hard.”
The Morven Chapter has a foundational connection to the education community, Little said. “Our national founders, the late Dora R. Mason and Mary Q. Moore were educators that had a huge, unified impact on the sisters in Las Amigas.”
The Morven Chapter of Las Amigas also has several connections to Morven Elementary School — members Ernestine Gaddy, Johnie Pettiford, Judy Simon and former MES Principal Marilynn Bennett all work or have worked at the school. Bennett gave the benediction to start the luncheon on Friday.
Other members of the Morven Chapter include Winnie Bennett, National Queen Elizabeth Kersey, Pat McCoy, Beulah Pratt, Brenda DeBerry, Bernita Barrino, Danielle Blount and Diane Melton.
