State’s unemployment rate drops to 9.4 percent in April

RALEIGH — North Carolina’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for April fell 0.3 of a percentage point to 9.4 percent from March’s revised rate of 9.7 percent, as the number of persons unemployed decreased by 12,686 to 439,368.

“Since January of 2010, our rate has dropped by two full percentage points and employers have added more than 100,000 jobs,” said N.C. Department of Commerce Deputy Secretary Dale Carroll. “Putting North Carolinians back to work remains our priority. Our employment service offices are located throughout North Carolina to provide numerous programs and job search assistance.”

Seasonally adjusted total non-farm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey, decreased by 1,300 to 3,958,100 in April. Since April 2011, total non-farm jobs gained 30,300 with the majority of

the increase coming from the private sector (25,500). The major industry with the largest over-the-month increase was professional & business services, which gained 3,600.

The largest over-the-year increase of major industries was also in professional & business services, which gained 9,300 jobs, followed by education & health services at 8,400, and trade, transportation & utilities at 6,700.

The number of people employed (smoothed seasonally adjusted) increased by 1,471 to 4,229,753 over the month, and by 63,513 over the year. The state unemployment rate in April 2011 was 10.4 percent.

The next unemployment update is scheduled for Friday, May 25, when the county unemployment rates for April 2012 will be released.
