Gene McIntyre, Republican candidate for the 25th N.C. Senate District, flipped his truck yesterday on his way to Rowan for a campaign event, according to Anson County Republican party chair Donna Wells. He is now “resting comfortably,” according to his campaign’s post on his Facebook page at 7 a.m. Thursday.

“[Wednesday], Gene was traveling from a campaign event in Stanly County to door knock in Rowan County,” the post reads. “On his way to Rowan, Gene was involved in a one-car accident. He was taken to Stanly Regional Medical Center and then transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for further evaluation. Gene is resting comfortably with his wife, Sue, and children. They are thankful for the prayers and well wishes being sent. Gene fully intends to be back out on the campaign trail very soon, spreading his positive message for the need of a conservative, effective senator for the 25th District in Raleigh. Please continue to keep Gene in your thoughts and prayers.”

Gene McLaurin, McIntyre’s Democratic opponent, called for prayers for McIntyre on his Facebook page. “There are many things more important than politics,” McLaurin wrote. “The McLaurin family is praying for Gene and his family and we ask you to join us.”

Late Thursday morning, McIntyre’s Facebook page was updated with the following post: “Gene is doing much better this morning! Doctors have reassessed and Gene will NOT have to have surgery! He is having a late breakfast with Sue and is on his way to a quick recovery. PRAYER WORKS!”

Last year’s redistricting brought southeastern Rowan County into the district in addition to Scotland, Richmond, Anson and Stanly counties.
