Nearly 50 bicycling enthusiasts from around the state — and even two from Canada — made the trek to Ansonville early Saturday morning to take part in the annual Discover Anson Bike Ride.
The ride started and ended at Ansonville Elementary School, and took riders on a 30-, 50- or 75-mile paths through the Anson countryside.
“It’s beautiful here,” said Matt Micalizzi of Toronto, who drove 13 hours to participate in the ride and planned to make the 13-hour drive back once he finished. Micalizzi said that he saw the ride on active.com, and was looking for a nice ride outside Canada, since Hurricane Sandy had canceled many events in that area.
Robert Epskamp of Charlotte, is formerly from a town north of Toronto, and participated in the bike ride as well. He said he rides with a club out of Waxhaw, and one of its members suggested the ride.
The Anson County Chamber of Commerce organizes the ride every year on the first Saturday in November. Chamber executive director Lynn Edwards said that a total of 49 registered for the ride, which was down a few from previous years, but still a good turnout.
Of the 49 riders, about five or six from outside the county stayed in Anson overnight. Edwards encouraged the riders to participate again next year, and to consider staying overnight to see what Anson County has to offer.
The bike ride kicked off a day of festivities in Ansonville, which included the yearly Ansonville Volunteer Fire Department barbecue sale and Homecoming parade that afternoon.
