The Wadesboro Town Council unanimously approved a game room application by Ashton Taylor at its regular monthly meeting.

Taylor said that she was born and raised in Charlotte, but has lived in Wadesboro for three and a half years, and has noticed there’s not a lot to do in town, especially for young people. “I would like to be able to offer something to do,” she said.

Taylor plans to open a game room in the building at the corner of Rutherford and Martin streets. She said there will be no Internet gambling machines; only games and pool tables.

Interim Town Manager Cecil Wood pointed out that the police department had noted activity in the building before the business license was issued, but Taylor assured the council that no money had exchanged hands. Taylor also assured the council that she will take the appropriate security measures once the game room opens.

In other business, the council unanimously approved the Pee Dee Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan, which Wood said would help the town be able to procure FEMA funding in the event of a disaster, whether natural or manmade. The plan also calls involves Richmond, Scotland and Montgomery counties, and would provide for mutual aid between the four counties.

The council also heard from Wadesboro resident David Harrington, who has appeared before the board several times in the past six months regarding drainage problems on Ingram Street. Mayor Bill Thacker told Harington that public utilities director Hugh James “is keeping an eye on things down there.”

The council unanimously approved a resolution to join the Rocky River Planning Organization as well, a move that James said would help the town get approved for water and sewer grants from the Rural Center.

After Councilman Bobby Usrey brought it to the council’s attention, Interim Police Chief Thedis Spencer said his officers will look into a tractor-trailer that has been illegally parking in the Highland Woods area.

The council went into closed session at 5:30 p.m. to discuss legal and personnel matters.
