William Polk, who was born and raised in Anson County, is starting up a local semi-pro football team for young men ages 18 and up.

The team, called Anson M-Pact, is part of the United National Football League, and will play teams from around North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

“It’s still in the development stages,” Polk said. “We’re looking for players, coaches and sponsors. We’ve got about 35 signed up right now.”

The team will practice Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ray Shelton Ball Field in Wadesboro. The season starts July 20, and will include five home games and six away games. “There is no cutoff date for people who want to join the team,” Polk said, adding that as long as players can pay the $60 fee, they’re in.
