The Wadesboro Town Council awarded several appreciation and service plaques at its monthly meeting on Monday.

The council presented service appreciation plaques to several members of the water department and Wadesboro Police Department in appreciation of their dedicated service. Jeffrey McCormick, Marc Sessions, Kyle Beam, Gerald Cannon, Gene Stanback, Kristen Ray, Ephraim Davis, Scott Gulledge, Bebe Gaddy, John Register, Tim Watts, and Brandon Newton were all given plaques for their years of service.

Two Wadesboro police officers were recognized for their work on Jan. 14. Officers Stephen Goodwin and Justin Clark were off-duty when they saw a truck pulling a trailer from the Anson Machine Shop at about 11 p.m. Suspicious, they called dispatch to run the license numbers on the truck and trailer; the truck was traced to an out-of-county location and the trailer to Anson Machine Shop. Goodwin and Clark contacted on-duty officers and a vehicle, then foot, chase ensued, with the off-duty officers assisting. The case was forwarded to the detective division and other crimes were solved in the area based on Goodwin and Clark’s off-duty discovery.

Two Eagle Scouts, Ethan Wilson and Brandon Rowell, were awarded appreciation plaques in recognition of their Eagle service projects of a fence and a flagpole.

The board voted unanimously to appoint Phyllis Lowe back to her position as tax collector. The board also unanimously voted to approve the 2012-2013 audit contract.

The board also held a public hearing for Amanda Goodwin. Goodwin requested a rezoning of her property located at 1104 Morven Road from R-10 to R-0. The board approved her request unanimously.

A rough grading contract was awarded for the access road for Cobb-Vantress. Four informal bids ranging from $34,575 to $92,620 were reviewed. The board voted unanimously to award the project to McCollum Trucking & Grading, Inc., for the lowest bid. McCollum already has equipment at the site doing grading work.

Wadesboro Town Manager Alex Sewell discussed a budget ordinance amendment in his report. The board unanimously approved the amendment to the general fund, designed to result in a net increase of $44,500 in the expenditures of the general fund. The same amount of revenues were increased in the fund balance appropriation to balance the budget.

The mayor reminded the board of the 2013 Town Hall Day on March 27 at the LGFCU Conference Center in Raleigh, a chance for local municipalities to meet with district representatives.

The board adjourned and will next meet on Saturday at its town retreat from 9 a.m. to noon. It will hold its next regular meeting March 4 at 5 p.m.
