WADESBORO — Anson County Schools Superintendent Michael Freeman, who plans to retire on June 1, was honored by his peers for his over thirty years of service to the district during the virtual Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, May 19.

Freeman served Anson County Schools for over 35 years, seven of those years was as the Superintendent of Schools.

“Freeman exhibits all the hallmarks of exceptional commitment and dedication to public education and to the children of Anson County,” said Board of Education Chairman George Truman. “The Anson County Board of Education hereby commend Mr. Freeman for his lifetime of accomplishments and dedication his to public education. We extend our best wishes to Mr. Michael Freeman for a happy and active retirement.”

Originally from Lilesville, Freeman graduated from Bowman High School and earned college transfer credits from Anson Community College. His Bachelors’s and Masters’s Degree were both from Pembroke State University. Freeman also earned an Education Specialist Degree from Wentworth College.

Freeman worked in virtually every role in Anson County Schools including as a substitute teacher, teacher, assistant principal, principal, executive director, chief academic officer, chief operating officer, deputy superintendent, interim superintendent, and superintendent.

The Anson High School Athletic Complex was renovated under Freeman’s watch. Freeman also helped to secure $15,000,000 in funding from a grant for construction of a new Anson middle school.

During his tenure in the school system, Freeman has earned numerous awards and honors such as being named Anson County Principal of the Year in 2000 and 2006, 2006 Wachovia Principal of the Year Finalist, and 2018 Regional Superintendent of the Year for Region Four.

In addition to his service to Anson County Schools, Freeman also a Co-Coordinator for the Southern Association of Colleges and School.
