Smoke alarm saves Wadesboro family

A Wadesboro family is safe and sound today, and Fire Chief Marc Sessions credits their lives to a working smoke alarm.

The family called 911 on Dec. 3 and the Wadesboro Fire Department, assisted by the Polkton Fire Department and Anson Emergency Medical Services, responded. When officials arrived, the family had already left the house uninjured, according to a release from Sessions.

The residents had been notified of the fire by a smoke alarm.

“Working smoke alarms still provide the single best defense for homeowners,” Sessions said in the release.

The fire department found that the fire was started by unattended cooking, adding that the National Fire Prevention Association cites unattended cooking as the top cause of residential fires in the United States.

The damage to the house totaled about $25,000.
