Wadesboro council considers renaming Salisbury Street; public input sought

Wadesboro town leaders are seeking public opinion as the council looks at renaming two streets.

The council may change Salisbury Street to MLK Jr. Boulevard on U.S. 74 from South Main Street to West Caswell Street.

It may also change the name of Salisbury Street to West Martin Street between U.S. 74 and West Martin Street.

The change could create some work for residents who live on that street.

The town would let “local utility companies, all town departments, Anson County government, North Carolina Department of Transportation Division 10, and the U.S. Postal Service” know about the changes, the town said in a press release March 23. The rest would be up to area residents.

“Individual property owners and residents would be responsible for notifying all other parties,” the release said. “Parties to notify may include the Department of Motor Vehicles, Social Security Administration, insurance companies, banks and credit card companies, as well as others who may regularly send mail to the previous address.”

Property owners and residents on the street would have to pay the fees for any changes with those companies.

The topic came up during the council’s planning retreat on March 19.

“It’s time to change the connotation of Salisbury Street from something negative to something positive,” Mayor Bill Thacker said at the retreat.

The council will hold a public hearing on the name change during its next meeting at 5 p.m. April 4.

Citizens are also welcome to send their thoughts on the change to wadesboroclerk@windstream.net, bringing a letter to the town hall or mailing one to P.O. Box 697, Wadesboro, NC 28170 by April 1.
