Anson County gets in holiday spirits with Christmas events

Senior luncheon

Anson County will hold its annual senior Christmas luncheon at South Piedmont Community College’s Lockhart-Taylor Center in Wadesboro beginning at 11 a.m. on Dec. 7 and 8. Meals will be held on two days due to limited seating capacity, with up to 250 seniors served each day.

A turkey lunch with sides, dessert and tea will be served, and guests can participate in games. The registration deadline was Dec. 2.

Breakfast with Santa

Uptown Wadesboro, Inc. will host a Breakfast with Santa event on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 8-10 a.m. at Oliver’s Hometown Restaurant and Bar, located at 121 East Wade Street (across from town hall).

Children, family and friends will have a pancake breakfast and a visit with Santa. Little ones will be able to share their Christmas wish list with the jolly man in red.

The menu will include a choice of plain pancakes or chocolate chip pancakes, maple syrup, bacon, orange juice and coffee.

The cost will be $6 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Tickets will be available at the door.

Senior trip

Grace Senior Center will take a one-day trip on Dec. 13 to Benson for the Christmas lights, with shopping, barbecue and going to Meadow Lights in Benson to see the lights. There will be over 30 acres of lights, and a train that will give tours through 10 acres of lights.

The cost is $55 per person. The registration deadline was Dec. 2.

Christmas dinner

Faith Based Center of Hope will host its annual Christmas dinner for the homeless, sick and shut-ins on Saturday, Dec. 17 beginning at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on Salisbury Street.

Vancine Sturdivant, CEO of the group, stated that each year during the dinner, each citizen who attends receives gifts and are instructed to not open their presents until Santa comes. In addition to their dinner and presents, each guest is also given fruit and hygiene bags.

Monetary or food contributions are appreciated.

Christmas giveaways

Harvest Ministries will give away hundreds of toys, prizes, bicycles and more from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 18. The church partnered with Toys for Tots this year to reach more families. One person will leave with a new television, $200 cash or a special prize. Free Christmas goodie bags will be given to each family. A bus will also be available for free rides.

The Toys for Tots raffle will also be held that day, and a meal will be prepared with the help of local restaurants, grocery stores and others.

To donate gifts or to ask for a free ride, call Pastor Steve Adams 704-695-2879. Donors can also contact Adams at pastorsteve@harvestmin.com. All gifts are tax-deductible and must be received no later than Friday, Dec. 16.

The church is located behind the Pizza Hut in Wadesboro, near the McDonald’s. The event is scheduled to be held after area church services.

Planetarium show

The Wadesboro Rotary Planetarium and Science Center will show its new Christmas show, “The Star of Bethlehem,” to teach guests about the historical and scientific facts related to the time of the birth of Jesus. The audience will see an investigation into what the star of Bethlehem that led the shepherds to baby Christ may have been, using historical and astronomical information.

The show will be free to the public, though donations will be accepted. Call for a reservation as seats are limited to 30 per show. A tour of the animal room is included. Call 704-694-4417 ext. 01005 to make a reservation.

Church gala, program

Pleasant Hill Baptist Church will hold a Christmas gala at the Lockhart-Taylor Center at 6 p.m. Dec. 17. The church will request donations of $30 for a couple or $20 for an individual.

East Rock Ford will hold is annual Christmas program at 2:30 p.m. A Christmas dinner will follow morning worship.

Christmas play

The Ansonia Theatre will present, “A Stranger for Christmas,” a NarroWay Production, on Dec. 19 at 11 a.m. The show is based on the book written by Carol Lynn Pearson and the challenge, “Call your children. Ask them if they’ll take in an old lady who needs a family for Christmas. Go on, call them,” according to NarroWay.net.

Tickets are $15 for the general public. Theater sponsors may purchase tickets for $10 each up to the number of their sponsorship allotment. All seating will be general admission seating. Doors will open at 10 a.m.

Tickets will not be available to purchase online. To purchase tickets, call the Anson County Arts council at 704-694-4950 or visit during regular office hours from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Hampton B. Allen Library will show several holiday-themed movies this month.
