CHESTERFIELD, S.C. — A man accused of leading authorities on a chase across the state line was stopped in his tracks when a deputy blocked the road with his car and pointed his gun at the fleeing driver.
Joshua Domonique Ellerbe, 24, of 2 Chapman St., Cheraw, crossed into Chesterfield County, South Carolina while speeding away from an Anson County sheriff’s deputy around 6:41 p.m. July 11, according to an incident report.
Cpl. Robert White of the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office intercepted Ellerbe’s 2002 Volvo S80 sedan at the intersection of Fred Davis Road and Westfield Creek Church Road northeast of Chesterfield. Seeing the Volvo approaching on Fred Davis Road with an Anson County deputy in pursuit, White pulled his car across the road.
“Upon exiting my vehicle, the vehicle that was coming toward me was all over the roadway from side to side,” White said in the report. “At this time, I pulled my duty weapon and pointed it at the driver of the vehicle, which was still coming toward me. I was also giving the driver verbal instructions to stop the vehicle.”
White wrote that he recognized the driver as Joshua Ellerbe of Cheraw, known by the alias J-5. Ellerbe stopped the car, raised his hands in surrender and followed White’s instructions to lay face-down on the side of the road.
Anson County sheriff’s Sgt. D. Hughes and Deputy J. Lundy arrived at the scene. White arrested Ellerbe on charges of driving without a valid license and reckless driving.
Ellerbe was booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center on the South Carolina charges. He also faces North Carolina charges of felony fleeing or eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, reckless driving to endanger, driving while license revoked and speeding in Anson County.
Ellerbe is serving two years’ probation following a June 5 conviction of felony larceny from a person in Mecklenburg County, according to the N.C. Division of Adult Correction.
