Several awards were brought back to Anson County following presentations made June 19 during the annual South Central District Activity Day.

More than 400 youth an adults attended the event at Highland Middle School in Harnett County.

A presentation is a method used to communicate an idea by showing and/or telling, according to 4-H Youth Development Director Roshunda Blount with the N.C. Cooperative Extension office in Anson County.

“It can be a demonstration that uses posters and other visual aides or an illustrated talk that uses posters and other visual aids, and they must be a minimum of five minutes,” she said.

There are a total of 32 categories that youth can choose to speak on, covering multiple topics.

Blount said the goal is to be able to construct a presentation on a topic of their choice; organize the material into a speech; and learn and get comfortable with their presentation to present on the county and district level, in hopes of advancing to state competition.

Anson’s youth presentations included:Concussions in Football ( Cameron Tillman); The Benefits of Sewing (Milayjah Smith); The Truth about Trombones (Keyshawn Tillman); and Radical Reactions (Quenton Cromartie).

“Those all chose something that either interests them or something that they were already doing and had apassion for,” Blount added.

Katie Edwards also performed a piano solo for 4-H Entertains and played a self-composed piece entitled, “Blue Dream.”

Smith was the District Gold Winner for Family and Consumer Sciences, ages 14 through 18 and Keyshawn Tillman was the district silver winner for Arts and Communication, ages 14 through 18.

Smith will go on to compete at state competitions in Raleigh on July 21.

“Youth were overall pleased with how they presented at district competition,” Blount said. “They are all winners to me because it is not easy to stand before an audience and speak.”

Others in attendance from the county were 4-H’ers Kendall Duncan, Zoë Martin, Dylan Alexander and Katie Edwards. The 4-H volunteer leaders were Sharon Edwards, Debra Ratliff, Betty Garris, Pearl Blount, Carrissima Martin, Seanee Alexander, Tonja Smith and parents and relatives, Kishi Tillman.

“Youth worked with parents, 4-H volunteer leaders and the 4-H agent to get information together and organized,” Blount said. “We have a county-level competition in May and then the district competition is always sometime in June.

“Congratulations to all on a job well done,” Blount said. “All youth did a fantastic job and I am very proud of each of them. Anson County 4-H was represented very well at District Activity Day.”
