Anson’s economic summit moves to fall

After being held in March for the past two years, organizers have decided to move the annual Anson County Economic Summit to the fall. The summit is planned for 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 16 at the Lockhart-Taylor Center in Wadesboro.

South Piedmont Community College president Dr. Stan Sidor is one of the organizers of the summit. “Strangely enough,” he explained, “putting it on in the spring makes it hard for our legislators to attend because they’re in session. But as it turns out, they’re still working on the budget so we’re a little nervous.”

The summit will continue, even if Rep. Mark Brody and Sen. Tom McInnis are unable to participate after all, Sidor said. “They’re working on the budget, and we know that’s where they need to be.”

The state lawmakers are scheduled for a portion of the morning session.

Other speakers include: Tammy Whaley of Duke Energy, David Hollars of Regional Workforce Development, Anson County Schools Superintendent Michael Freeman, Dr. Sidor, Anson Economic Development Corporation chair Chuck Horne, and Dan Parks, an associate executive director of Industry Expansion Solutions with N.C. State University. AEDC vice chair Don Scarborough will give closing remarks.

“We anticipate approximately 80-95 people to attend this event,” said Jennifer Joyner-Talbot, SPCC executive director of apprenticeship, professional programs and marketing. “This summit will talk heavily about the progress made thus far in 2015 and speak more about strategy. It will also focus on actionable steps to move Anson County forward.”

Those wishing to attend must RSVP for lunch accommodations to jjoyner-talbot@spcc.edu.
