McLeod Orthopaedics-Cheraw now offers a groundbreaking treatment option that has been shown to improve outcomes for orthopedic conditions using only the patients’ blood.
The new therapy is called Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP therapy.
According to the release, it is a natural, non-surgical treatment that utilizes the healing properties of platelets taken from the blood of the patient in the office setting, separated and concentrated and then injected into the site of concern. This technique is showing major successes with osteoarthritis of joints in the knee, shoulder, hip and spine, as well as other conditions, by jumpstarting the healing process.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) therapy can be applied to an array of musculoskeletal injuries and has exhibited positive results. An orthopedic surgeon may recommend this innovative and minimally invasive approach to treat a wide range of conditions and areas of pain, including:
- Joint arthritis
- Hip, knee and shoulder pain
- Chronic tendonitis/tendinosis in the elbow, hip, or knee, foot and ankle
- Acute ligament and muscle injuries in athletes
- Common sports injuries
- Muscle Tears
- Neck and back pain
- Sciatica
- Fractures
PRP therapy can be used as a compliment to orthopedic surgery, as a potential method for enhancing the healing process. Patients can receive PRP injections during or after surgery to accelerate recovery.
Dr. Thomas DiStefano, orthopedic surgeon, and Eric Willoughby, DNP, serve patients at McLeod Orthopaedics Cheraw, where they diagnose and treat an array of orthopedic conditions for residents of Chesterfield and Marlboro counties and surrounding areas.
