Anson High School senior Timothy Horne recently signed his commitment to play football for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Gloria Howard met Horne during the Anson basketball players’ March 11 trip to attend a Charlotte Hornets game.

Howard contacted Pastor Steve Adams of Harvest Ministries in Wadesboro in an effort to provide Horne with everything he would need to get started in his UNC-Charlotte dorm room.

Harvest Ministries and Howard were able to collect more than $1,500 in donations, including $300 from Home Depot, $430 from Lowe’s, $185 from Walmart, $350 from Harris Teeter and more than $260 from community members.

The donations were used for items such as a refrigerator, personal items, microwave, towels, dish detergent, office furniture, kitchen items and bookshelves. Harris Teeter will provide an additional $300 to allow Horne to fill his dorm room with food and grocery items during his first week of school.

“When Miss Howard met Timmy, she found out what many Anson County folks already knew — that Timmy is a humble, polite and outstanding young man,” Adams said. “It was a no-brainer for us to partner with her to make this happen.”

Harvest Ministries Outreach Center, along with Howard and others, are planning a cookout celebration for 1 p.m. Saturday, May 21 in the outreach center’s parking lot. The event will be a celebration of Horne’s scholarship as well as a celebration of current and former Anson student-athletes who have had success in sports and life.

Invitations have been sent to former Bearcats Barquel Rivers, Bunyan Tyson, Brandon Ellerbe, JJ Tillman, Stephone Anthony and others.

For more information or to partner in this endeavor, contact Adams at 704-695-2879.
