RALEIGH — A Wadesboro woman was arrested on charges of tax offenses on May 25.
Lukinda M. Moore, 38, allegedly failed to turn in tax documents and claimed a tax withholding she did not qualify for.
Moore, an employee with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Adult Corrections and Juvenile Justice, allegedly submitted a fraudulent Form NC-4 Employee Withholding Allowance Certificate in tax year 2014.
“These actions caused her employer to not withhold state individual income tax from her wages, when in fact she was not exempt from state individual income tax withholding, all in an attempt to evade and defeat the North Carolina Individual Income Tax,” the North Carolina Department of Revenue said in a press release. “Additional warrants allege that Moore was required to file a North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return for tax years 2012 and 2013, but willfully failed to file the returns.”
The investigation into Moore’s taxes was conducted by a special agent with the North Carolina Department of Revenue’s Criminal Investigations Section in Raleigh, according to the release.
Moore was charged with one county of attempting to evade or defeat tax, a felony, and two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file a return, supply information or pay tax.
She had her first court appearance in the Wake County District Court on May 26. Records show her next court date is scheduled for June 16.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
