U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger retained his victory after the results from the primary were recounted.
Opponent Mark Harris announced he would be requesting the recount on June 7. He qualified for the recount since he lost to Pittenger by less than 1 percent in the primary.
“The voters of the 9th Congressional District have spoken: it’s time for a change in Washington,” Harris said in a press release announcing his intention to call for a recount. “We owe it to the voters of the 9th District to make sure this is done right and make sure every last voice is heard.”
The results for Anson were the same as the canvas numbers. In Anson, Todd Johnson received 333 votes (61.10 percent), Mark Harris received 119 (21.83 percent) and Robert Pittenger received 93 (17.06 percent).
Each elections office in the district had until Wednesday to conduct the recount and report the results, according to Steve Adams, director of the Anson County Board of Elections.
Harris picked up one vote in Richmond County after the election office there conducted its recount Monday morning.
The district-wide numbers did change slightly after the recount began.
After the election, the N.C. State Board of Elections reported that Pittenger had 9,268 votes (34.69 percent) and Harris had 9,126 (34.42 percent).
As of 5 p.m. Monday following the recount, Pittenger had 9,298 votes (34.95 percent) and Harris had 9,163 (34.44 percent).
Pittenger’s campaign re-declared its victory just before 5 p.m. Monday.
“We had full faith in the election process and are happy our victory was verified,” Pittenger said in a press release. “We must now come together as conservatives to defeat the Democrats’ liberal agenda in the 2016 election.”
Pittenger will face Democrat Christian Cano in the November election.
