“Driving Miss Daisy” is coming to the Ansonia Theatre next month.

The play follows Daisy Werthan, an elderly Jewish widow, whose son, Boolie Werthan, forces her to quit driving and hires African-American driver Hoke Colburn to be her chauffeur. Set in Atlanta from 1948-1973, Alfred Uhry’s play shows how the two unlikely friends become closer despite their differences and the racial tensions of the time.

Tommy Wooten, theater director for the Anson County Arts Council, has participants from Marshville, Wadesboro, Morven and Monroe who will be in the play. “We’re drawing talent from all over the region, which is great,” he said.

Libby Dandridge will play Miss Daisy, Leon Gatewood will portray Hoke, and Mark Traywick will be Boolie.

Tickets to the show will be $15 each, though a discount is available for those who purchase 10 or more tickets. Season tickets are $60 and include tickets to five different shows throughout the season.

The play will show at the Ansonia Theatre from Sept. 11-21.
