The Anson High School Lady Bearcat Volleyball Team hopes to bounce back from a close loss when they host West Stanly Tuesday to decide who is the top team in the Rocky River Conference.
After trouncing Montgomery Center 3-1 earlier this season, the Lady Timberwolves had the last laugh in a five-set grudge match with a myriad of lead-changes throughout the evening as the Lady Bearcats fell 25-13, 25-17, 5-25, 22-25 and 8-15, which dropped their record to 8-3.
Outside hitter Brooklyn Miles tied setter Allie Steagall and outside hitter Alena Baxter for the team lead in kills with 9 each. Baxter and Steagal also tied for the team lead in aces with four each, followed by outside hitter Lauren Lomax and libero Hannah Austin, who each had 3. Defensively, Steagall had a team-leading 22 digs, followed by Austin with 17, Baxter with 15 and Miles with 14. At the net, Baxter had a team-leading 3 blocks.
The Lady Bearcats opened the week with a pair of sweeps against the Cheraw Lady Braves (0-7) and the Monroe Lady Redhawks (2-6) respectively. Anson swept Cheraw 25-6, 25-19 and 25-16. Baxter had a team-leading 12 kills, followed by Lomax and Miles, who each had 6. Steagall had a team-leading 12 aces while also leading in digs with 11 and even assists with 22. As for Monroe, the Lady Bearcats dispatched them in similar fashion 25-7, 25-17 and 25-16. Baxter had a team-leading 8 kills, followed by Lomax and Miles, who each had 5. Baxter, Austin, Miles and outside hitter Sophia Yang tied for the team lead in aces with three each. Austin had a team-leading 12 digs, followed by Steagall’s 12.
With last Thursday’s loss, the Lady Bearcats fall to 8-3 but remain 4-1 in conference play with conference foe West Stanly (5-0) looking to put their undefeated 12-0 record on the line Tuesday. Then Lady Bearcats face winless Forest Hills (0-11) Thursday. First serve for both games is slated for 6 p.m.
