Pets across the county will have the chance to show off their duds in a costume contest on Saturday.

The Pet Costume and Talent Contest will be held during the Fall Festival. The event will hopefully help raise money and find homes for animals in the Anson County Animal Shelter, according to a release from the town of Wadesboro.

Meatballs the Pug is getting cocky about his chance to win, the dog’s owner, town manager Alex Sewell, said.

“After dressing up as a pumpkin, Meatballs thinks he can’t be beat and is honestly getting a little arrogant,” Sewell explained.

He invited animals from across the county to try and knock Meatballs off his pedestal.

“Dog, cat, llama, or whatever… I encourage all pets to come challenge Meatballs,” Sewell said. “Just please, no exotic or dangerous animals.”

Meatballs has a modest 100 followers on his Instagram account, @meatballsthepug, which features photos of the dapper dog wearing a Christmas outfit, PeopleFest shirt and even a red-and-white polka dot tie.

The registration form for the contest includes fields for the pet’s talents, hobbies, celebrity impressions, favorite foods and more, though the town advised that owners drawing a blank can skip questions if they don’t know their pet’s favorite musical artists or dream theme song. There is no entry fee.

The contest will be held during Uptown Wadesboro’s Fall Festival at 11 a.m. Saturday on the town square across from the Anson County Government Building.

To enter animals in the contest, contact Sewell at wadesboromanager@windstream.net or call the town hall at 704-694-5171. Animal handlers need to bring their pets 15 minutes before the contest begins.
