Anson County is home to over 400 farmers who grow food and fiber. Each farm has a unique story. This year Anson Cooperative Extension highlights Peachland NC farmer, Chad Horne.
Chad grew up on a small farm where his family raised hogs and cows. As a youth he participated in county livestock show circuits. During that time his father gave him a colt from a mare the family used to plow the garden. Chad eventually sold the colt when he was in the third grade, and with the money, “bought a go-cart, 3 pigs, and put $100 in the bank,” he recalled, “and that just kind of set me on fire. I wanted to be able to sell animals from then on.”
By then young Chad knew he was going to become a farmer and a firefighter. At age 20 he had attained both goals, adapted to market trends and switched from hogs to meat goats, purchased some poultry houses and started raising chickens for Perdue. During that time he became an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and worked part-time with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in Anson and Union Counties prior to farming full-time. He has enjoys serving with the Peachland Fire Department +30 years and appreciates being able to help others in his community.
In recent years Horne Farm has entered the local foods market. Consumers can purchase cuts of his grass-fed Angus beef and bottled honey from the apiary. NY strip, ground beef, cube steak, sirloin, ribeye, and filet mignon are a few of the cuts offered. Chad Horne can be contacted at 704-695-2551, and Horne Farm products are available at Peaches ‘n Cream produce and ice cream stand on Hwy 74 in Wadesboro.
