MORVEN — Sheriff’s deputies have charged a Wadesboro man with murder after an acquaintance was killed during a weekend party.
Napoleon Cash, 49, was arrested Sunday on a count of first-degree murder in the Saturday stabbing of Vernon Little, 54, of Morven, according to Chief Deputy Scott Howell of the Anson County Sheriff’s Office.
Cash is being held in the Anson County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond, according to jail records. He is scheduled to appear in court at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17.
Howell said that the killing was the result of an argument, though authorities have not yet learned what the fight was about. The men were attending a party at the Sportsmen’s Club on Diggs Road east of Morven.
The two men knew each other, according to Howell.
“They did know each other, but I don’t know how well their relationship was,” Howell said.
Howell was unsure whether Little had been drinking, but said Cash had consumed alcohol.
“He was picked up at the scene and he was intoxicated, so he was held in the Anson County Jail to give him time to sober up prior to being questioned by detectives, but he was in our custody the whole time,” Howell said.
Cash was still at the club when deputies arrived, and witnesses there pointed him out as a suspect, Howell said.
Little died after being stabbed on his face, side and leg, Howell said. Deputies recovered the knife suspected to be the murder weapon at the scene.
The 911 call came in at about 7:04 p.m. Saturday, according to Howell.
Cash received a suspended sentence and served probation on a Level II driving while impaired conviction in Anson County in January 2013, according to the N.C. Division of Adult Correction. He also served probation on an Anson County DWI conviction in September 2007.
Records show Cash’s first North Carolina criminal conviction came in 1989 on an impaired driving charge. He also was convicted of misdemeanor driving while license revoked in January 1994.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
