Two sixth-graders were recognized during the school board meeting on Monday evening for placing in a statewide contest.
“This the fun part of our meeting,” Superintendent Michael Freeman said. “We get to recognize some of our young students. We have some talent in Anson County, and we notice it all the time: parents, grandparents, Board of Education members, school staff. We notice the talent we have. But from time to time, that talent is recognized by outside agencies and outside folks because of special work the students do that brings about accolades for their accomplishments.”
Jada Ridley and Gracie Stinson, both sixth-graders, placed in the 2015 North Carolina School Bus Safety poster contest. Jada attends Lilesville Elementary School and Gracie goes to Peachland-Polkton Elementary School.
Jada was the third-place winner and Gracie the fourth-place winner in their grade division. Freeman gave both girls certificates for their achievements.
During his report to the board, Freeman said that the county has begun offering online transcript services. Although the website is still being worked on, former students will be able to access their high school transcripts online, though parents of current students will still need to go to the schools for those files.
Records from the schools will be taken from the schools to the records room and kept in a fireproof area while they are being digitized.
Freeman also said the State Employees Credit Union has listened to the pleas of places like Anson County and has added scholarship opportunities for cooperative innovating high school programs and early colleges, making Anson New Technology High School and Anson County Early College eligible to receive scholarships.
Previously, scholarships were only given to students from traditional high schools, but Freeman said the decision will directly affect Anson students who were previously ineligible for an SECU scholarship.
