MCFARLAN — Matthew Foster was recognized at a Court of Honor and awarded the Eagle Scout rank, the highest in Boy Scouting, on Dec. 18, 2016.

The rank of Eagle Scout has always carried with it a special significance, not only in Scouting but also in higher education, businesses and in the military. The award is a performance-based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained since Boy Scouting began in 1912.

It includes performing leadership roles within the troop as well as earning a minimum of 21 merit badges in areas including first aid, citizenship, cooking, environmental science, camping and personal life skills. It also requires that the Scout develop, organize and execute a significant community service project before his 18th birthday.

Only about 5 percent of all Boy Scouts earn Eagle Scout. A 2012 Baylor University study reports that Eagle Scouts are more likely to stay physically fit, volunteer for church and civic organizations, maintain positive family relationships, be leaders in their work and community, donate money to charities, and work with neighbors to improve where they live.

Matthew is the son of Michael and Karey-Anne Foster, and the grandson of Bill and Brenda Foster of McFarlan. He is a member of Troop 589 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church in McFarlan. The Scoutmaster is Perry Johnson, and the Assistant Scoutmasters are Sharon and Stephen Johnson. Matthew is a 2016 graduate of Cheraw High School and is currently a student at Richmond Community College.

For his project, Matthew renovated the McFarlan Town Hall by refurbishing the flag pole and base, painting and repairing the railings and signage on the handicapped access ramp, and landscaping the grounds.

At the Court of Honor, Matthew’s father shared his enthusiasm for Boy Scouting.

“Scouting means so much to Matthew and to our entire family,” he said. “There is no better program for young men to be involved in today than Boy Scouts.”
