CHAPEL HILL — The Anson Record was honored with two awards Thursday night at the 2019 Winter Convention of the N.C. Press Association.
Alan Wooten, the newspaper’s editor, was accorded second place in the “Editorials” category. A staff award for third place was earned in “News Coverage.” The staff includes Wooten and reporter Natalie Davis, and a design team located in Lumberton.
The awards were the first for the newspaper in two years. In 2017, the Record took home awards for one first place and one third place.
The Anson Record participates with the smallest circulation-sized papers in the Community Division, which is for non-dailies. The contest overall had more than 4,000 entries representing over 100 newspapers and online sites from the mountains to the coast. The contest period was from Oct. 1, 2017, through Sept. 30, 2018.
Colleagues from the press association in New Jersey handled the judging of entries.
In the editorials competition, participants enter a collection of three editorials that appear at any time during the year. Wooten’s opinions were on a lawsuit, North Carolina lawmakers and flooding.
In the news coverage competition, participants enter news pages that are from consecutive editions in one of two months that are selected by the NCPA staff. The Sept. 5 and 12 editions were entered.
